Quality Assurance

The UK’s teahcing quality is assessed thoroughly by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education)in the UK. The subject departments and areas at in every university are assessed on criteria like as curriculum design, assessment, student support. Te rating of subjects is done as “Excellent”, “Satisfactory” or “Unsatisfactory”, and departments are given a score out of 24 (all scoring 22 and above as considered as excellent students).

The UK universities’research strength is measured regulalry. Till the year 2008, RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) was the system applied. However, it has noe been replaced with REF (results for the first) that firts operated in the year 2014. However, the 2008 data still exists.

Under the RAE and the REF, research is rated on a scale of “unclassified” – “4*”, with definitions of each category as follows:

4* World-class quality in terms of rigour, originality and significance.
3* Internationally excellent quality in terms of siginificance, originality, significance and rigour but which nonetheless falls short of the highest standards of excellence.
2* Quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
1* Quality that is recognised nationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
Unclassified Quality that falls below the standard of nationally recognised work. Or work which does not meet the published definition of research for the purposes of this assessment.

English requirements

All students who have not taught in english before wou;d normaly be needed to have a TOEFL or IELTS test before they join the university. The specific requirements of English weill be dependent on the institution, but normally range from IELTS 5.5 to IELTS 7.5.

Instead of the IELTS or TOEFL, those students who have been educated in English language are allowed to submit their highschool qualifications. Several unicersities need the student to have scored an equivalent to C at the GCSE level.

Peparation programmes for the English Language

The students who never meet the minimum requirements of the Engish anguage are allowed to take an option of an English Language preparation programme. Several Univesities offer intensive English Language summer schools, aimed at helping the students attain the expected level of English conforming to their chosen programme. Such courses normally range from 4-16 weeks.  At the same time, many schools exist across the country offering pure courses of the English langage and students can take that. Any students opting for the courses need to be careful to ensure that their universities accept them.

Pre-Masters programmes

The pre-master programmes are meant for the students who do not meet the expected qualifications for a direct entry. The programmes have been created in a way that they prepare the studdents for tyhe posgraduate stidies in the UK. Some of the universities have independent pre-masters programes whereas others partner with different special colleges.
